I had so many issues with FamilyTreeMaker on both Windows and Mac, which is a shame because the idea of it is terrific. But I swear I spent more time troubleshooting software than doing genealogy.
I used to use Scrivener for writing (not genealogy) and found it overwhelming. For genealogy I'm using MacFamilyTree but also lots of documents in Pages and Numbers organized into folders by couple or by family name. I put my genealogy folder in the sidebar of my finder so I can go right to those files when I want them.
Not that anyone asked for all this advice but I can't sleep so I'm typing away LOL

That's for Windows. I don't think there is anything free for Mac except Gramps, but I was not personally willing to commit to the learning curve:
