Whoa. "Aunt in law?" Who is the head of household, William Roberts, I presume? So that's the aunt of his wife, Mary. Except she's widowed, so James is her married name. I think. THis is new. Gad is documented as staying for a while in Utica, NY before moving on to Iowa. Looks like Elizabeth James was the Elizabeth James on the Martha I. Word and she is a relative, after all! This is fantastic new stuff you found!

Aunt-in-law, aunt-in-law. Either she's Mary's aunt, and so an aunt-in-law to Wm Roberts, or she's the widow of Mary's uncle (which would make her an aunt-in-law -in-law to Wm Roberts, but no one would bother saying that). She's either William James's sister, and took her maiden name after being widowed, or she's the wife of his brother... His brother Stephen, maybe. The one who was on the ship.
