Hi there distant not-cousin-at-all! :-) I think your Joseph Kauffman misled me twenty years or so ago, because for some time I assumed he had to be my guy and eventually I'd find the proof. Of course, what I found disproved it, instead. And yeah, there are a lot of Kauffmans, aren't there? My friend (hey canonisrelative, you reading this?) has a sister who attended a Mennonite school, iirc, and there were so many Kauffmans if you gave your name you then clarified further with something about which Kauffman line you were.
I've been rethinking what I think I "know" and wondering if I should doubt Charles Fahs Coffman's offhand data. He didn't source it, and I've never found where he found it. Maybe my Joseph wasn't born in 1765 and/or wasn't "from Penna." He is clearly found in York Twp, Ohio in the 1820, 1830, and 1840 censuses, but those censuses don't list exact age. At least his being alive that late is sufficient to prove he's not your Joseph Kauffman. So in terms of original sources other than Charles Fahs Coffman, the anti-semite, I only know he married in Virginia and lived in York, Ohio. He may have not had anything to do with Pennsylvania at all. *frets*
