Hi there! Just wondering if anyone was still watching or thinking of using this community. :)

I was out of work for nearly a year, and at some point (to keep my brain from utterly rotting) I started more seriously pursuing mine and my spouse's family trees. And some of the stuff I'm finding strikes me as So Very Cool, I feel the need to share with others who are also into this stuff.

I'm still following. I just wasn't sure the community had any one else following it still. I'd love to hear about your cool finds, as I've had a few of my own recently.

Although I haven't done anything actively with genealogy, I've "met" a distant cousin on the 'net who's very involved with it. I joined this group out of curiosity, and if time permits, would love to know how to start some of my own searches.

Honestly, the best place to start is with your immediate family: you, siblings, parents, grandparents. Especially with the 1940 U.S. Census now available and completely indexed, you should be able to search for your grandparents and their immediate families (parents and siblings). It won't give you exact years, but it will give you the age of household members as of April 1, 1940 -- enough to be able to search +/- one year for their birth dates.

If you use Ancestry.com to start charting, it will start giving you likely matches -- additional information, records, etc -- for the people you enter. It's up to you to determine if it's a true match or not, but if you like mysteries, that's where the real fun can begin.
